About the Meriden Fire Department
The Meriden Fire Department proudly protects approx. 59,000 people living in an area of 25 square miles. We operate out of 5 career stations. Chief James Trainor, leads us into action. The Department consists of 98 firefighters of which 21 are on duty at all times, operating 5 engines, 1 Truck company, led by an Assistant Chief on each shift. Each company is led either by a Captain or a Lieutenant. We operate the Fire Marshall’s office, the Public Safety Dispatch Office, and the department Training Division. In addition to our suppression functions we provide technical rescue for the City and a First Responder Program that is second to none. Many of the buildings in town are of the multiple occupancy type, and other hazards in the city include, a large retail shopping mall, many light commercial and some old mill industrial buildings, an Amtrak rail line, Route 15, Interstate 91 and 691. Meriden is surrounded by mountains, which due to their ledges are responsible for many mountain rescues each year.
